  • ‘3 symbols’ is an experiment in how to reconcile in a single image the idea of photographic realism with the symbolism of forms, lines and dots, which represent the ‘unreal’ and hidden, the fundamental forces that lie within/behind what we see and experience as ‘real life’.

The ‘real’ is a composite of 630 images found from the internet. 21 words were selected intuitively from a seed list. these words were typed into Google Images and 30 images for each word selected. each set of 30 images was then composited into a single image, resulting in 21 images which were then composited into a final image.

The ‘unreal’ is represented by hand-drawn shapes, painted onto the surface of the composite image in 3 rectangular desaturated spaces. 3 graphical symbols were created to represent the forces of birth/growth, death/decay and healing/reconciliation. These were then developed into a set of 9 symbols to represent the forces acting on each other.
